Audio Formats
Currently, the most common audio format on the Web is MP3. It suits the medium because MP3 files can be compressed several times more than a CD-quality file, yet still retain much of its sound quality. The extra compression means that MP3 files can be downloaded fairly quickly and can therefore also be used for streaming music. Since MP3 is a format that most web users are able to play, it is a good choice for distribution on the Web.
There are three major groups of audio file formats:
Slightly compressed formats
Formats with lossless compression
- FLAC
- Monkey's Audio (file extension: APE)
- WavPack
- Shorten
- TTA
- Apple Lossless
- Lossless Windows Media Audio (WMA)
Formats with lossy compression
- MP3
- Vorbis (OGG)
- Lossy Windows Media Audio (WMA)
- AAC
