Images and media published on the Web have a license that applies to them. The license determines whether or not other people may use the media and, if so, what terms exist for its usage. This applies to licenses for images, music and video.

© All Rights Reserved

This license means that nobody may reuse the media, for any purpose, except with the express permission of its creator. This is the standard license that applies to all media by default. If no license is specified, it is assumed that the license is 'All Rights Reserved'.

Creative Commons

Creative Commons is a grassroots project to relax the tight restrictions of the All Rights Reserved license. By applying a Creative Commons license to his or her work, an artist is explicitly allowing certain uses of the work. Different types of Creative Commons licenses have different restrictions:

Attribution

standard.gif Others may copy, distribute, display, and perform the copyrighted work - and derivative works based upon it - but only if they give credit to the creator.

Noncommercial

standard.gif Others may copy, distribute, display, and perform the work - and derivative works based upon it - but for noncommercial purposes only.

No Derivative Works

standard.gif Others may copy, distribute, display, and perform only verbatim copies of the work, not derivative works based upon it.

Share Alike

standard.gif Others may distribute derivative works only under a license identical to the license that governs the original work.
