Last.fm is a website for listening to music, with a difference. Once registered, the site starts to learn the musical tastes of the user, based on what music the user listens to. It then allows the user to listen to similar artists and to explore the music that other people listen to. In this way, Last.fm hosts music by both commercially successful artists and unsigned acts.

Downloading Plugins

Last.fm learns your music tastes through what you listen to on their website. However, there a couple of plugins you could download (here) to expand this...

The Last.fm player is a way to listen to music radio from Last.fm without actually having to go to the website. The Audioscrobbler plugin is a way to include in your profile information about the CDs and MP3s you listen to on your own computer. The plugin hooks into your chosen media player - e.g. Winamp, iTunes or Windows Media Player - and updates your profile each time you listen to music on the media player.

Submitting Your Tracks

To get started on Last.fm, you have to create an account for a record label (here). You don't have to actually be already running a record label to do this - it is just a way for Last.fm to assign new to the site.

You need to have several MP3s that are grouped together as an album, along with some cover artwork for the album. You cannot upload single tracks that are not in an album. Then, you have the option to say which bands the music is similar to, which is a way to get other users to find the music.
