Streaming

Streaming is a method of viewing/listening to media while it is downloading from the Web. For example, an audio file that starts playing in the user's browser before the file is completely downloaded.

Streaming is useful for broadcasts of large files, because it allows the files to play almost immediately. It is also the only way to receive live broadcasts over the Internet.
