Expanding Your Blog

See WordPress.com for information about setting up and using your blog.

Pages and Posts

Pages differ from posts because the latter fall away from the homepage as they get replaced by newer posts, whereas, the former always have a place in the main navigation on your blog site.

Create an 'About' Page

On your blog, create a new page called 'About', or something similar. On that page, put something about yourself or your blog. Include in the text any projects you are working on now, as well as past and future projects.

Add at least one image - it doesn't have to be of yourself. Make sure that you are legally permitted to use the image - check the license on the image and ensure it is Creative Commons or something similar.

Create Other Pages

Creating a few pages on your site is a good way to keep useful information easily available to the user. Some other possibilities is a page giving links to all your past projects. For example:

  • Songs you've recorded
  • Upcoming gig dates
  • Main blog posts you've written
  • Your photos or videos
  • Your profiles on other websites
  • Contact information

Comment On Another Blog

The best way to let people know that you exist on the Web - that you are producing something valuable and that you have a website - is to take an interest in what other people are doing on their websites.

Search for a blog that mentions something that interests you. You can search within WordPress.com, or with an external search engine, such as Technorati. Leave a comment on any posts that interests you. When you make a comment, there is usually a place where you can put you website address.

Some people who read your comment - especially the person who owns the blog - may follow the link to your website. If you have written on your blog about something relevant to the comment you are making, you may want to leave a link to your blog post in the text of the comment.

Interconnect Your Websites

Now that you've got a blog on WordPress and an account on Ourmedia, start linking the two accounts. On the About page on your blog, include a link to your Ourmedia personal page. And on your Ourmedia page, include a link back to your blog.

The same applies if you have accounts on MySpace, Last.fm or any other online presence you have.
